Diversity and Inclusion

LGBTQ+

Pupils at Barrington C of E Primary School come from a variety of backgrounds and families. Celebrating different families and ensuring that everyone feels welcomed and a part of our school is a priority for us.

Tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying is crucial to making all children feel welcome, and enabling them to learn to accept others for who they are. Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic (HBT) bullying is bullying directed at someone who is or is perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans (LGBT).

Our Headteacher is trained as a Stonewall Champion and we have a script that all our staff use if faced with homophobic language from our pupils.  To read the script please click on the link below. Many parents have said that they find this useful in tacking any inappropriate use of the word “gay” at home.

Throughout the year, our pupils are taught that ‘difference is just difference’.

We use a range of different books and stories to stimulate discussion and raise the children’s awareness of difference and the importance of accepting everyone for who they are.

The planning below sets out the texts used with each year group and how we ensure that a range of issues are discussed with all our children.

Please find a list of useful websites below that can help you find support with LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) related issues.
